REDUNDANCes

REDUNDANCes continues the choreographic investigation into the rearticulation of the classical ballet stage code through a collage of reworked classical variations. Oscillating between the notions of “redundant dances” and “redundancies of dance,” the title ironically engages with debates around usefulness in art, as well as with tendencies toward symbolic meaning-making and narrative alignment with contemporary life.
The piece consists of sixteen adaptations unfolding across four acts. Composer Antis Skordis re-orchestrates the original orchestral excerpts into percussive versions, disrupting the relationship between rhythm and melody while preserving the integrity of the original scores. The dancers navigate all possible configurations—solos, duets, trios, quartets, and quintets—structured around a pseudo-libretto that generates a set of roles. Through humor and formal rigor, the work addresses both the impulse to make things unnecessarily difficult and the difficulty of perceiving one’s own practice as redundant.
